It is hard to get pet friendly accommodation in Melbourne, but we encourage visitors with pets at Alto. We have found that people who want pet friendly accommodation have been animal lovers with well behaved pets who leave the house spotless, so it works for us too. And it is not just dogs. One lady wanting pet friendly accommodation was showing her prize cats at a cat show, and again she left the house spotless.
A surprise in Richmond is the Mary Street park, just a few minutes east by car or a 10 minute walk from our pet friendly accommodation. Every day there is a meeting of dogs and owners. There is a big doggy group and of course a small doggy group. Amazing that a dozen or so friendly pet dogs can be so well behaved. You can almost see the smiles on the doggy faces as they run after a ball or a Kong. It is as if they are saying ‘look at me, this is bliss!’
The owners are a friendly bunch too, accepting newcomers easily, their pets the common ground.
In earlier years we had our own two terriers who had a good time living in our Richmond accommodation. They took the rumble of trams in their stride, happy to sit at our feet outside Torch cafe, while we ate the big breakfast and sipped the Torch aromatic coffee. They loved walking the streets of Richmond, an interesting discovery of scents and dog emails, whether it was just the tiny park at the top of the street, or the green winding Vaucluse avenue.
