How Richmond Accommodation has changed over the years

Who would have thought in 1950 that Richmond would be the gentrified trendy cafe, bar and restaurant district that it is today?

During Melbourne’s early years, Richmond was a working class suburb dotted with factories. Richmond workers lived in tiny cottages that can still be seen in the back streets of Cremorne, and even in parts of the Richmond Hill, above Alto in Waverley Street.

Some accommodation doubled as speakeasies and brothels in the late 1800s. There were shootouts in the streets as infamous criminals like Squizzy Taylor operated nearby.
On Richmond Hill, the high part of Richmond, stately two storey Victorian terraces were the choice homes for the wealthy.
In the 1950s a wave of migrants came from Greece and Italy – they have become very wealthy and most of them still live in Richmond. These migrants often grew fruit trees and vegetables in their front garden and some of these still exist today.

Hidden in the back lanes is another kind of accommodation – Warehouse conversions – a good example being the Australian Knitting Mills behind Richmond station.
Alto is a different kind of accommodation in Richmond. It is a modern townhouse designed in the early days of the leading architects Neo Metro. When you stay with us you are embedded in Richmond’s history.
