On May 7, 2011, Richmond Football Club broke through a goal-to-goal round with Fremantle Football Club, emerging victorious in the last quarter ahead of their opposing team by 49 points.

Through it all, Richmond Football Club Coach Damien Hardwick was calm, collected and clear about his team’s goals. He stayed that way all throughout the first half of the season, even as his team lost game after game. He remained the same as the Richmond Melbourne Football team picked up their game mid season and started winning one game after another.

As the team scored what he calls “the best win in his time at the club” Mr. Hardwick admits the latest victory that the Richmond Melbourne team scored was a great win. “The great thing from our point of view is we beat a top four side which we haven’t been able to do since my time here so it’s a great win for us,” he says.

Mr. Hardwick explains that the highlights of the Richmond Melbourne game were the spread of the team’s goal kickers and Dustin Martin and Brett Deledio coming out of their shells and showing the team that they have much to contribute during this game. The two players helped make it possible for the team to win this match. “They battled through and made a real solid contribution in the last quarter to help get us over the line,” he states.

According to Mr. Hardwick, “The thing they do well is they compete and win one on one contests. The game now, with the substitution rule, is tightening up a little bit, so the contested ball and tackle effectiveness are becoming key indicators — and those guys do that very well. Then when the game does open up, those guys are very, very quick; they really get on their bike. We have been very happy with their seasons thus far.”

Mr. Hardwick also had much praise for the other members of the Richmond Melbourne team, saying that their efforts really paid off. Jack Riewoldt kicked four goals in yet another strong performance at full-forward while Trent Cotchin and Robin Nahas each kicked four and Tyrone Vickery kicked three. The Tigers had a total of 10 goal kickers.

“We went back to school and managed to find our way through it (the zone). Sometimes young sides do struggle with instruction but to their credit they battled on really well,” Mr. Hardwick relates.

The Richmond Melbourne team started off rocky but now they are battle-hardened and ready to tackle all their future opponents. Go team!

The Tigers welcomes one of Ireland’s rising young football stars to Richmond Melbourne. The Richmond Football Club will select John Heslin as an international rookie in next December’s draft.
Richmond Melbourne is about to usher in a new era of young and agile football stars. John Heslin excels at soccer, hurling and football. The Tigers are confident that he has the potential to succeed at AFL Football, which is why they chose him.

John has recently concluded a one-week trial at the Tigers’ ME Bank Centre, Punt Road Oval headquarters in Richmond Melbourne. He was impressed with the new facilities, most especially with the people, who he described as “welcoming and friendly.”

The Tigers saw him playing in the Sigerson Cup in Ireland, an inter-university competition and the next day he got the phone call and was brought to Richmond Melbourne the week after.
John says he will focus on his Australian football education – work on the kicking, and improve his skills set with the help of patient people. It’s going to take some time to adapt but he’s confident that he can be an asset to Richmond Melbourne’s team, the Tigers.

According to John, the Irish love Australian Football. He says it’s a “good sport” and a combination of Gaelic football and Rugby. He likes that there’s some “contact” during the game, where he joined practice for the first time in Richmond Melbourne.

He’s happy to be part of such a great team of young, aggressive players who he’s comfortable playing with. He’s also very excited about their future and they’re having so much fun. Richmond Melbourne, prepare to meet your new rookie – John Heslin!

Richmond Melbourne, home of the Richmond Football Club will witness the clash between the Tigers and the Hawks. Young defender Dylan Grimes, the 19-year old who made his AFL debut last year and fellow defender David Astbury will face off against either Lance Franklin or Jarryd Roughead on Saturday night at the MCG.

Because of Alex Rance’s suspension and Will Thursfield’s ankle, Richmond Melbourne will witness a fight akin to David & Goliath’s epic battle – the Tiger’s 2 newbies and the Hawks’ 2 giants. Who will win? Find out next week in our next Richmond Football Club blog post.

Richmond Melbourne’s favourite coach, Damien Hardwick joked he may lose some sleep over this game, what with his new players battling against the power forwards from Hawthorne’s Football Club. One thing’s for sure, this is one match you ought to watch.

Coach Hardwick is confident in his new team players and is positive that Grimesy will most likely become a long-term player for his footy club. The big game in Richmond Melbourne on Saturday night will be his initiation rite. Everyone is keen to watch this game tomorrow.

Win or lose, in spite of their bumpy start, this Richmond Melbourne team is headed for the stars!

Alto Richmond Melbourne has lots of restaurants nearby. When you hit the corner at Swan St from Alto Richmond Melbourne, there are several. Here is another review. We like Richmond Pie Shop across the road at 200 Swan St for its convenience to Alto Richmond Melbourne and the rich tasty pies.

Review by Rex: Richmond Pie Shop 200 Swan St

I do like a real meat pie, with crisp pastry and chunky meat. The Richmond Pie Shop is one place that sells real chunky pies. No frills. Their slogan is ‘Pies the old fashioned way’. Their colours are yellow like the Richmond football club – the owner for 11 years tells me it is just coincidence. They have some tables to sit and have your pie and read the paper.
There is a LOT of choice including chicken and vegetable series pies.
I had the Beef and Pepper ($4.70) with real chunks of meat. Tasty.

I really do like the pies, but they are not cheap, $3.90 for the plain pies and 4.70 for gourmet pies, and I am just as happy with a lesser pie from the Vietnamese down the road.

If you are serious about pies, Richmond Pie Shop is the place.

Walking back to Alto Richmond Melbourne, you might think of your next meal. A tip for those who like to cook, there is a huge choice of fresh food at Coles supermarket a few doors from the pie shop, just 70 metres from the door of our Richmond Melbourne townhouse. Of course the Alto kitchen is fully equipped with all you need for cooking.

Alto Melbourne short term has lots of restaurants and cafes nearby. When you cross Swan st and head west along Swan St from Alto Melbourne short term, there is a good choice. Here is another review. We like Swan Street Boulangerie for its closeness to Alto Melbourne short term and the fresh rice paper rolls and sandwiches.

Review by Rex: Swan St Boulangerie Bakery Cafe 176 Swan St

This handy cafe is Cambodian baker meets Melbourne cafe, squeezed between Torch the quintessential coffee shop and the smart Urban Burger.

They bake their own food in-house: bread, pastries, pies and pasties. Prices are cheap, good value.
The staff are friendly and one day they point and call out ‘My place’! I realise I’m wearing a Sriem Riep tee shirt, and we reminisce of another land.

My favourite is the simple rice paper rolls ($4.50) a mix of beef and prawn rice paper rolls wrapped with a little pot of sauce, all very efficient.

It is a popular place for freshly made sandwiches, fast and cheap. The coffee is OK, but for real coffee, Torch next door is the go.

You can take away, sit inside, or sit outside and watch the trams glide by, caught in a middle world between Richmond and Asia.

Before you return to Alto Melbourne short term, you can plan the next meal. A tip for those who like to cook, there is a wide choice of fresh ingredients at Coles supermarket on the corner, just 70 metres from the door of our Melbourne short term townhouse. Our kitchen is fully equipped with all you need. for cooking a meal at home.
